So far the premium bus segment in India has been dominated in India by Volvo B7R but all that could change soon thanks to the entry of Mercedes in India with its Actros range of buses.Indians love the Mercedes brand and I have no doubts that even their buses would be well received in India the only thing Mercedes need to keep in mind is the fact that maintainance costs should not be sky high.
The volvo B7R's are priced between Rs. 55 Lakhs and 60 Lakhs and mercedes plan to launch their buses with a similar price tag.Mercedes say that it will go slow on production of these high-end buses in order to tap the market properly. Engines for the commercial vehicles will be sourced from Germany.
“We can think of setting up an engine assembly line up as and when it is viable,” Aulbur said. The company does have space at the Pune complex for such a facility. The company has tied up with bus body maker Sutlej to make intercity luxury buses and the production is due to start next year.
Mercedes also plan to source auto components worth $2.2 billion from the Indian market this year which would make the value of components sourced from India will be more than the company’s revenues in the country.
