That's precisely the question a number of owners of the older generation cars have.Yes many of them may even be E-5 compliant but they shall not be able to run on E-10[petrol or diesel].E-5 stands for 5% ethanol, blended petrol whereas E-10 stands for 10% ethanol blended petrol.
Experts say these cars may require a change in ECU and a few changes in aluminum and rubber parts but what about the older generation cars which have long been discontinued. Also what happen to vehicles who don't even have a manufacturers backing[like for instance Daewoo motors],then comes the question of cost, this transition would not be a cheap process and in a cost conscious market like India that could be a big roadblock.
Hopefully the government is looking into all these problems before the transition and it does not turn out into a messy affair
As for the newer generation vehicles owners and people set to buy car before October 2008, don't worry Honda isn't the only manufacturer whose cars are E-10 compliant most manufacturers are now having cars which comply with E-10 standards so you are not really going to be affected in any way. However it would be best to check with the manufacturer whether the car you are going in for is indeed E-10 compliant.
