Honda India to play fuel efficiency, green card to sell more cars

With its home market stagnating, car maker Honda is accelerating its India plans. And in true Honda style, the strategy will be different than its arch-rival Suzuki.

Japanese carmaker Honda is set to play the fuel efficiency and its green card for selling more cars. With it's mid size sedan City-ZX giving it a sales boost with better mileage, Honda wants to repeat the success formula in compact cars too. Honda is expected to offer its first compact car in early 2009. So can the absence of a small diesel engine be filled in by a hybrid?

M Takedagawa, CEO, Honda Siel Cars India said, “We are confident to work with the small car petrol engine which will have high fuel efficiency. Hybrid is also an option.”

That hybrid option can first be seen in the Civic next year. But will Honda put its solo diesel engine of 2.2 litres and 140 horsepower into a CRV or an Accord later? “For larger cars, with the 2.2 litre diesel, yes, we are seriously considering it,” Takedagawa added.

Now you know the reason behind all those green ads honda is showing around these days, yes they want you to buy their hybrids. As for mileage honda cars better be fuel-efficient after all you buy them at a premium compared to its peers so how else would it even out.One question to honda india is what makes you more green than the others.
