Tata motors could do well to notice that with growing incomes people have started splurging more on their cars as well. Now the entry level buyer has moved up a segment from the good old maruti 800 to the Alto. The Maruti 800 does not sell like it used to so just having a cheap car in the market may not necessarily ensure volumes, ofcourse Tata have the benefit of a diesel engine.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Alto has crossed sales of one lakh in a fiscal. In September ‘07, Alto crossed the landmark of 750,000 units domestic sales within seven years of its launch. It sold 20,332 units in September this year, behind its highest ever monthly sales of 22,294 units in October 2006, which incidentally is also the highest monthly sales of any Indian car.
Alto is the first car to sell 100,000 unit in just 150 days in 2006-07. In the same fiscal, , it took just 11 months for Alto to cross 200,000 units. Over the years, Alto has emerged as a preferred car for not only urban mobility but has also led the pack in rural pockets, where it has attracted buyers with its low running and ownership costs.
What Maruti ideally needs is an alternate fuel arrangement if a diesel engine is not possible for the Alto since customers in this segment are as much concerned about running costs as they are about the initial costs of the vehicle that would be the killer blow from Maruti.
