Enviorenmentalists upset by Toyota's stance

Being at the top does have its shares of problems and toyota seems to be having to contend with too many issues related to them recently. The prius has been the enviorenmentalists favourites but first toyota's move to penetrate the pickup market with the tundra and the latest move by toyota along with Detroit automakers in opposing a Senate bill setting a 35 mile-per-gallon standard by 2020, favoring an easier standard proposed in the House has really upset the Environmentalists.

The National Resources Defense Council, an environmental group, said Tuesday it had forwarded more than 8,000 e-mails to Toyota criticizing its stance in the fuel economy debate.Deron Lovaas, vehicles campaign director for the NRDC, started the online drive two weeks ago, saying the House bill didn’t go far enough.

“Toyota is now the world’s largest automaker, so they bear some added responsibility,” Lovaas said. “They’re out there with their green halo, justifiably touting their technology with the Prius. The question is why the inconsistency in terms of their issues on policy.”

Toyota has been quick to respond to the NRDC’s drive. In a public relations blog, two Toyota executives have defended the company’s position over the past few weeks, saying the automaker pushed the industry to support an increase in federal standards for the first time, and wanted Congress to set a new standard soon.
