Aluminium manufaturers rejoice as more and more car makers turn towards aluminium

Carmakers are switching from steel to aluminium in vehicle bodies and parts.

"Use of aluminium in cars in increasing. The fuel prices are high so for lighter vehicles and crash test safety since it can't use plastics. It's very expensive to do it today but with R&D and money going in it, metal producers and OEMs are changing this, says Amit Kalyani, ED, Bharat Forge.

Aluminium seems like a natural solution especially for the road wheel market. That's because they are 20% lighter than steel wheels but manufacturing costs are at least three times more expensive.

Mercedes-Benz will use an aluminium body technology for its next-generation SL sports car. Aston Martin, Audi, Jaguar and Rolls Royce also use aluminium. With all these carmakers in India already, the aluminium wave seems set to sweep in soon.

Not very long before a lot more cars become all aluminium and with increase in volumes use of aluminium is sure to get cheaper in the future.
